Dr. Albaugh is a licensed clinical psychologist and neuroscientist specializing in the evidence-based assessment and treatment of mood and anxiety problems across the lifespan. A graduate of Colby College, he received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Vermont and completed his APA-accredited clinical internship at the University of Vermont, in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychological Science. He then completed an additional four years of postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. Complementing his extensive clinical training and experience, he brings nearly 20 years of neuroscience and neuroimaging research to bear for his clients. His research has aimed to better understand how common emotional and behavioral problems are related to aspects of brain structure and function in adolescents and adults. He has also examined how engaging in health and wellness activities, such as physical exercise, mindfulness practice, and music training, can positively impact the brain and behavior.

 

Matt is an author on nearly 70 peer-reviewed publications, with his work appearing in top psychiatry, psychology, and clinical neuroscience journals. In recent years, he has received various grants and awards from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), both the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, and the Society of Biological Psychiatry, including a prestigious Clinical Scientist Career Development Award (K08) from the NIMH. His research has been covered in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Science Magazine, US News & World Report, and other news outlets.
